warm and cool

acrylic on canvas

This assignment was for a color study. We were supposed to take the same object and paint it once with warm colors i.e. reds, yellows, and oranges and once with cool colors i.e. blues, purples, and greens. I chose to paint an apple. I liked the warm painting more, because it seemed more realistic.

This is Georgia O'Keefe's "Red Canna." She chose all warm colors and it really gives the painting some warmth. It's hard to tell from the painting what the object is without the name. To me it looks a little abstract.

Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Starry Night" is an example of a cool colors painting. There are a few warm colors featured, but for the most part this painting is done with cool colors. It makes the painting feel cold and not very warm and inviting.
